Great idea about twisting the splice together and uneven length. BUT, cold solder joints are bad jui jui; weak, high resistance, brittle. Better way is to follow all directions, +add flux to bundled wires, apply solder THEN move hot soldering iron to rest on copper furthest from the center of the joint. The iron will heat the wire and when the wire (not the solder)is hot enough the solder will flow through the entire joint. A proper solder joint is shiny and has no solder bumps. Such a joint will last longer than the wire (and you won't have the fun of tracing an intermittent bad contact for the rest of your life.)
